St. Brigid’s Day

Published on February 1, 2021
Today, 1st February marks the feast of St. Brigid.
The custom of making the crosses out of rushes derived from Brigid visiting a dying man. She fashioned a makeshift cross by plaiting rushes strewn on the hut floor.
To this day crosses are still being made by families and children in school, they are then hung in the house to provide protection for the rest of the year.
